[quotea5610="the-unknown"]Erhh why say "My city is better then yours" ? When we are all on one planet - can't we just say "Our Planet is the best" or something like that?[/quotea5610]
But there's no fun in that ... and besides, unless you know something I don't humans haven't colonised another world so there is nothing to compare it to :D

The greatest city in the Western world is either Rome or Athens. You guys are all way too provincial ...

Just kidding about the provincial part. And on that note, I am off on vacation. Ya'll will enjoy an unusual stretch of peace and quiet. You're welcome.

@toxckrayon: greatest department store?maybe...but the greates shopping center is the Mall of America, which is in central part of the USA (IIRC from my marketing class...) anyway I don't think the area of shops is the good indicator for which city is better...

English is most widely spoken - that's true, but you (and I'm telling to all these who speaks only English) shouldn't cease on English, because you lose much. It helps much if you want to understand different cultures...And you don't have to look as a silly boy, when someone change to other language :D ...I saw at least few non-English topics on this board...and the share of non-English languges in Internet is growing...Japanese has more than 20%, German 6%, French 4%, Spanish 4%...English has only 54% (IIRC) now, which isn't so much if you know, that in 1998 it was more than 80%...

btw. I know 4 languages...1 Slavonic (Polish), 1 latin (Spanish), 1 Germanic (German)...and English, because it's still the language you are suppose to know... :D

Which is irrelevant since this forums primary language is English :) We have other support sites for non-English speakers.

Where do these figures comes from? I'm incredibly surprised and very sceptical, of these 56% of non-English sites, how many make the Top 500 most visited sites list for example?

Most of these sites are aviable in different language versions, e.g. microsoft.com, yahoo.com
Others are sites of american newspapers (e.g. NYTimes.com). There are two causes why so many people read them:
1) So many people live in the usa.
2) The happenings in the usa are important for the whole world.
[quote3c077="toxckrayon"]First off, we're 3 hours ahead of those guys in LA ...[/quote3c077]
When you write your posts (should be around lunch break in NY) i'm just coming from supper and i'm ahead to London for one hour, too!
[quote3c077="toxckrayon"]... and there's just no greater city in the world than NYC[/quote3c077]
I think there is no "greatest city". I also could say Berlin is that, but I would not be right, too. Each city has is specialities but no one is the best.

Languages

Post by Verb »

Je parle l'anglais parce j'habit en L'angleterre, mais je parle en petit francais autre. parce francais pres des l'anglais.

I speak other languages, namely french, but only a little. (the previous sentance would probably sound a bit incoherrant to a frenchman.)

Thats another statement i can add to the list. Why is it that a lot of americans will always say their country, or part of it [b06c4f]IS[/b06c4f] the best or [b06c4f]IS[/b06c4f] the most powerful, or [b06c4f]IS[/b06c4f] superior? i have not seen many people of other nations make an outrageous claim like that, but you americans seem to make it all the time.... Then again, don't answer that question, i think the american ego is just too big for mortal minds to contemplate. :) :)

Then you have never heard the Canadians brag about their country. And people in other countries do the same thing, it's just that they are not as high a profile as Americans.

The American Ego

Post by Verb »

I have spoken to many people, from many countries, but the americans are the only people i have known to blindly swear that they are superior.(with a few exceptions)

but to be fair, i have never spoken to a canadian before. (to my knowledge)
