It seems that there are at least two documentation errors on the dev wiki.
on https://wiki.phpbb.com/Viewtopic_Template_Variables it claims that ON_PAGE should give the page number. It doesn't. CURRENT_PAGE seems to be the right value.
on the same page S_NUM_POSTS is supposed to give the number of posts in a topic. It seems to give the number of posts on the page
I did notice that the page is old but I can't find any uppdated docs either ........
