About bbcode_bitfield and bbcode_uid

Is there any documents on the design of BBCode?

I am just wondering what these two fields are used for, why not just simply replace the BBCode inside the posts with corresponding HTML code?

It's not used anymore with new text parser, but it is kept for BC.
