I'd look to something like Facebook which is all about users and who is online or not. They just have usually a little green "on" light next to a user's name when they are online. Something similar would work fine IMO next to the user's name.

Glowing names are a little silly and almost feel old fashioned.

Please don't break usability by selecting the wrong icon. Glowing or other attention-getting effects simply don't work in the prosilver scheme.

I like hanakin's idea to have a simple red or green circle to the right of the username. It works well in any environment and resolution.

I believe that not having the online/offline image (or any other indicator) is an option that should be considered. To some extent it is meaningless as it does not show who is actually online but who has an active session which is not the same thing.

Probably the better option is to show nothing. If you just show an empty circle there will be 1,001 support requests on how to remove it!

ACP->Load settings has a setting for Enable display of user online/offline information:, so this capability can already be controlled by the board admin.

I'd also vote for #7, keep it simple and minimal.
