Several Built in features to consider deeply

Post by NikolaCR »

1. Something like welcome message when you first time login on the board. I always felt nice when when system is set to greet you giving you few instructions in the message.

2. Private forums feature: newly created topic will be visible to OP and mod group or users you specify. Forums will be visible to everyone and ability to post there but only they can see the topic they created. This is very good when it comes to gaming orientated communities. Been recently talking to cousin about this and figured people in this field felt huge lack of these features. This is insanely good when it comes to reporting something and appealing for a ban and what not. Please consider this deeply. Thank you.

3. Separated permissions for view who is online where it wont even show it and be accessible for the groups you specify. This will avoid things like "you were online but ingored me" if you get my point.

4. Extend the censor feature. Prevent from posting, only warn and censor it via replacement that is. If setup right this will help with spam and bots that often post ads and such where you can censor a word that is actually not a bad word, just a word that is being a trouble on your board in the form of ads and such.

5. Extended profile viewing for moderators. Once you click on a user it will show several IP that were logged. Won't show same ones only if different. There can also be a button under to show more where it will compare those IP with posts and if they were linked with other users and who. This is something that I always wanted and when you combine it with suggestion #2 you get a fully functional forums for gamers and other type of people who are doing these things. After all, it can be enabled or disabled as said. This would boost the number of people running on phpbb forums. I know it from my personal experience.

- Please discuss those suggestion. If something is not right ask. I feel comfortable running on phpbb and been doing that for a while now. Those are the things that are actually missing and I can feel the lack all around. None of my suggestion has anything to do with the cosmetic. Those are high end features that will change how things are being done on the forums. No matter how you look at it, it won't do any harm. It can only benefit to everyone given the enable and disable buttons. Please consider this seriously. Thank you.

Nice suggestions although some of these I don't see as being something that needs to be in the core.
  1. An extension already exists for that.
  2. Has been discussed at length here.
  3. Might be something to consider.
  4. Actually censoring has been discussed for removal by some as it "doesn't work" for what it's intended purpose is, although I don't particularly agree with that. In any case I've never actually heard anyone ask for something like this so I would say it should just be an extension.
  5. I don't see how this is useful nor how it relates to point 2. How does knowing what IP addresses are associated with a user help with anything? This is also a first-time mention of anything like that.

Awesome; lets see it here.
1. Please link me. If that is a case I apologize on my lack of research prior posting. But regardless, that would be one good built in feature.
2. the extension itself is rather complex and does not do what I am suggesting. I believe? correct me if I am wrong. Whole point of this is to process appeals, reports against people, and general complaints in a different enviroment. I don't need to know why someone got banned or what lead to a ban and who might reported them for said action. Get my point? A private system.
3. Yeh agree on that one. I am developer on a gaming community and how many times I have to deal with "You were there" but ignored me. Plus it benefits to people who want to be more secrete.
4. Okay it can be an extension. However, you may want to provide an ability to make this place orientated to kids. And to begin with, swearing is bad. It grows into habit. May even shape a community different. Just ability to prevent people from doing these things that is.
5. It is useful, and very useful. You may want to crossreference the IPS for possible linked accounts, ban evasion and constant spam and toxicity against the community. Link this one with the point 2 and you get one good system for moderators to handle these issue. And guess what, all beauty in it is that you don't need any 3rd party app or page to do those. You can do it all at one place, on phpbb forums.

-Also, I apologize. I would like to suggest that known MOD topic age warning to be built in feature. Or rather, expansion of it where you can target certain forums with it. Ability for OP to countinue posting even if date ran out so others may proceed too. Someone bumping old threads is not really good. Especially when it comes to already discussed matter. Thank you.

I don't really see this working IRL, for example, you've got a bunch of players from a dorm, they've all got the same IP... Also, IMO it would be fine for an extension as the usefulness of it highly depends on the type of board you have.

IP yes, email not. Regardless, this helps a ton.

Even if they were being considered it would be unlikely that any of them would be implemented in the next few major releases (3.2, 3.3, 4.0), which is why it is being suggested to you to either develop or request extensions for those features in the appropriate forum on phpBB.com.

Really? While I don't have a problem with most of those being put off, the ability to only see your own topics is a much-requested feature. I can't believe that it won't be implemented for three years or more. :(

Which brings up another point. What new features are you considering for 3.2, 3.3 and 4.0?

Wasn't there a topic for this somewhere on here? I can't find it...

New Forum permission for viewing other users' topics

But is there a list of features being considered for the next 2-3 releases?
