Another thing to note is that if we drop IE8 then we can update jQuery to 2.x.
Pony99CA wrote:Ummm, most of those reasons are about IE 9 (and presumably earlier). Are you also suggesting dropping support for IE 9?
Yes, that would be fantastic.

Windows Vista has little market share which is certainly going to drop to an insignificant number after Windows 10 comes out.

Also, Windows 7 SP1 comes with IE10. And those who didn't update their Windows 7 and turned off automatic updates, they deserve to be screwed. Plus, if they did that, then they were computer savvy enough to install Chrome or Firefox.

Because i have encountered problems making some designs and in IE they looked terrible. Blocks appearing one under the other, instead of in the right of the first block. I just despise it as it is always causing troubles for webdesigners and the hardway of adding code to fix the site rendering in this damn nasty thing. I havent seen phpbb troubles in IE versions but it just shouldnt bother supporting it. If more and more people drop support, we can have it gone away in the pages of hate history  :D

@Pony99CA,
I doubt the workers are taking web-browsing too serious from their work pc. The number of non-government users is much larger than a few gov workers that only browse around five minutes when they are getting bored. If they want to browse the web properly, they should just use a tablet/kindle. Those computers arent designed for them to mess around on the web anyway.

Yeah I'm with Pony here. You're talking about something you're unqualified to give an opinion about. There are companies that allow browsing the Internet and they control everything and anything that gets installed on their computers. Your statement of "use a tablet/kindle" makes even less sense in these places since most of the time they would most likely NOT have wifi, and when they do it's restricted to their local network most of the time. Also you overlook a major mostly government-controlled web browsing hub: libraries. If you get on a library computer you're at their mercy as to what you can use for browsing. Same with schools. Basically any time you're using someone else's computer you're at the mercy of whatever they have installed on there, be it a company computer or not. Or do you install whatever you want on your friend's computers, even if they don't share your same views on browsers?

Yes, although not entirely true. You can download and use a portable browser or always carry it with you in a usb stick.

For the most part these computers won't let you run executables from external sources and sometimes not even allow plugging in external drives. ;) Also you're operating on the assumption that most people that go to a library for internet access actually have enough knowledge to bring their own flash drive with programs installed on it, which is really unrealistic.

I guess you never worked for any goverment? ;) From personal experience, and currently working in a goverment related company, is that there is done much more browsing as in a commercial company where profit is important.

Yes, you are right. Just saying that usually there can be a workaround by using a portable browser.

Well, what OS and browsers do you have there?

Maybe the qualified people should make it clear to us then, on what are the exact reasons IE should still be supported.
It appears that there are at least two or three only in this topic that could simplify it.
If no one is, there is nothing else to do for us normal users than just guess and debate the reasons.

Ultimately, Does it even matter if a design looks slightly worse in an older browser?
It's not as though a white page is going to appear for them and they can't use the site.

People don't want to develop for these versions of IE because it's a pain, possibly requiring extra workarounds that every browser has to load in and extra testing is required, all for a small minority to have the same web experience. Honestly, it could be avoided, and workload potentially halved. Being ruthless is surely the way to go.

Furthermore, 'Which IE versions should we kill' should be defined more, does it mean everything should look the same in all browsers, or just look and operate acceptably?

Nobody is disagreeing that IE8 should be left in the dust but even the poll you created shows that you're not thinking about anyone else but those that tend to visit this forum, many of which would not hesitate to say "forget about IE and let's just make sure it looks good in Chrome". Such a decision would not be made based on what a relatively small group of IE haters wants. Thinking of and looking at the bigger picture (the users) it's clear that IE9 support will need to be kept for the time being. IE8 not so much and, as stated, we could already say it's not supported for 3.2 and not have to think about it a whole lot.

It can actually end up being close to that bad, especially for anybody still using IE8. It depends on how many "modern" styling techniques are implemented in the styling.
