[RFC] Remove Its currently.. and Last visit

Post by Kamahl19 »

Hi,

what is the point of It is currently .. and Your last visit ... If i want to know the current time i look at right bottom corner. And i know when i was lastly on the forum. Maybe they server some purpose i dont see but are they so important that they have to be included on top of index?

So i suggest to remove them or at least move them somewhere else but rather remove.

AFAIK, the purpose is for time zone stuff. Because of time zones (especially on international forums) board time may be different than your own system time. When you are scanning the forum index for last posts you might want to know what time those last post times are based on.

For most local/country based boards I usually move that info to the footer or completely remove it, depending on the purpose of the board.
Above message may contain errors in grammar, spelling or wrongly chosen words. This is because I'm not a native speaker. My apologies in advance.

There is info about timezone in the footer exactly for this purpose.

But how many normal visitors of forum understand what does it mean?
On other hand that time in header shows only when user last time refreshed page. So it's not too helpful.

How many normal visitors check the Current time, then count the difference between it and theirs current time and then apply this difference on post times? :)

Certainly not me. For me would be best to see current board time and maybe difference between mine PC time and forum time. So instead "All times are GMT+00:00" I would like to see "Board time is shifted by +3 hrs" or something like that. Maybe, if there is the "Board time is shifted by +3 hrs", I wouldn't need to see current board time at all.

The idea of last visit is, so the user can detect if someone logged in for him :)

Well then it is done very poorly :D If we want to achieve this feature, it should be done like in gmail with list of last logins, times, places, IP adresses etc. And it should be in UCP, not in top of index where only important things should be.

You don't think that it's important to know if you've been hacked? :o Who would think to look in the UCP for that?

Both of those messages take a whole one line of text. If you want them implemented "better", that's fine. Put a :?: help icon next to them that pops open a window explaining what they're there for and, in the case of last visit, links to the UCP's Edit "Remember Me" login keys page, which shows where and when you logged in from (you did know about that, right?).

It's also odd that you post an RFC and start by asking "What's the point of....?" If you want to know the point, ask first, then open an RFC if the answer isn't satisfactory.

Steve

P.S. If you're really worried about wasting space, there's no reason to start an RFC (or almost any post) with "Hi" (especially on its own line). ;) And "what's the point" of two blank lines between paragraphs?
