Yup, that's exactly what I said in my previous post that was quoted... and suitably ignored.

Thanks for taking notice and at least looking at what I am proposing properly before shooting the idea down.

Hahaha, thanks :D

It's the same as every other forum I've been on in that regard though

You will notice a lot of ideas get shot down fast here. But thats probably to be expected.
The devs and "hang arounds" focus on their interpretation of code optimization/load and security. While forum admins focus on their idea of added value (features and fluff). Those ideas rarely match. :P

I don't like the exact implementation of Xenoforo as linked to in the TS, but the general idea is nice.
The way it displays is annoying since you can't read the first ± 20 items until they're all loaded (that's after 20 seconds...)

I'd say simply display the latest 10 all at once and than update every n seconds (config based, default 10 sec or so). Display them all at once with a nice fadein or something like that. That should result in an acceptable load I'd think.

However: I vote for this not to be in the core, but as an extension. Most users don't need it I think.
Above message may contain errors in grammar, spelling or wrongly chosen words. This is because I'm not a native speaker. My apologies in advance.

Yup totally agree Ger. That was one thing that also annoyed me on the forum I used to frequent, waiting on it to load up initially. All could be configurable though, as you say, the core idea is what I really like.

I would be more than happy with it being made available in any way, shape or form. I didn't realise that I could put it forward as a suggested extension. As part of the forum or as an add on would be great :)

It is entirely possible to implement this without using tons of resources. When a user performs an action (such as writing a post), a static RSS file is updated. The same data is shown to everyone, and there is an AJAX request every 3 seconds (configurable, for shared hosting). That wouldn't use much resources at all.

I'm actually +1 for this, and could see myself using it.

I was not saying anything about the idea, I was clarifying how it worked for the post immediately previous to the one I made. If you'd like to know what I think about the idea, I think something like this could be useful in some circumstances if it was designed well.

The only problem with static files is permissions. If the user is not going to be authenticated in any way, it can only store public information. Some boards choose to require logging in to view posts and content, and I believe at least that would need to be supported (posts requiring moderation privileges may be alright to ignore however).

Not really sure what happened here but I'm assuming you took what I said as sarcastic? I was being totally sincere as the previous person had completely ignored what I wrote even though they quoted it, not you :)
