New vs unread notifications

Post by imkingdavid »

Currently, I have an unread notification about a post on the mod queue. As I am not on the moderator team I am not really responsible for that and don't even want to spend the time clicking on the post link in the drop down to make the notification marked read. I also don't want to have to go into my UCP to manually mark it read (yes, I'm sometimes lazy).
However, until I do one of those things, I have the (1) indicator. IMO we should differentiate between new notifications and unread notification, much like we already do for PM's. That way, when I open the notification drop down, it was could send an AJAX request that would mark the notification as seen (ie no longer new) so the notification count would decrease, but it would still appear as unread in the list as it currently does until I actually click on it.
As I mentioned, this is how PM's work, and I think it should be similar for notifications.

On a side note, you can disable getting those notifications in the UCP Edit Notification Options.

Is this how notifications work on other sites that have them? My thought is that doing this might make it too easy to miss some notifications or forget about some.

As far as I can tell, this is how Facebook does it. I have the red number on the notifications icon and if I click it the number goes away but the notifications stay blue. Of course I don't get a lot of notifications on Facebook very often, so I may be remembering incorrectly. :P

I agree with making the behavior work as David described. In addition we could add a way to mark items as read right there from the drop down, rather than having to do so in the UCP.
