These requests for comments/change have lead to an implemented feature that has been successfully merged into the 3.1/Ascraeus branch. Everything listed in this forum will be available in phpBB 3.1.

It sounds interesting, although I am intrigued how it would handle the code in the template.

That's very easy. It requires just few minor edits in overall_header.html
Here is another example, this one uses phpBB 3.0 with my mobile style that also has microdata:
