Then that's a different concern and doesn't sound like it would "degrade" post quality, as you previously stated. Sounds more like you're worried about abuse of the feature, which can be done with pretty much any feature in phpBB.
My opinion is that the ability to mention someone in their posts should not be granted to newly registered users and should be limited in the number of mentions to be done in a single post and maybe even in consecutive posts by the same user. With those constraints (and maybe others) it should be enough to be a usable feature without being annoying.

I can also add a post wont be made by only using @mention on its own
Re: [RFC] Ability to @mention specific users in posts
Agreed, the rule should be similar to the one used for email notifications. To make it even more granular maybe adding an option to recieve mentions only from users on your friend lists, although I'm not sure how many people actually use the friend list feature.DavidIQ wrote: My opinion is that the ability to mention someone in their posts should not be granted to newly registered users and should be limited in the number of mentions to be done in a single post and maybe even in consecutive posts by the same user. Slightly better English than it was in 2005, still improving

Maybe people would use it more if the friends/foes feature was more useful.ecwpa wrote:Agreed, the rule should be similar to the one used for email notifications. Re: [RFC] Ability to @mention specific users in posts
Hello!
I'd like to revive the discussion and point out this great MOD AOS Tag User BBCode which has greatly improved the forum experience for my users. Across a large forum and many discussions its a great way to call people's attention to certain posts/topics. Its a very enjoyable experience and I think it would make a great feature, if carefully implemented to handle permissions issues, tagging groups, etc. to core. I can't think of one negative to having this feature on all boards. Granted, all interested boards could simply install the mod, but that argument could be made for a great many features in core. If it was automatically included/tightly integrated new communities with not very experiences moderators can also enjoy it.
Right now there is already a very decent permissions setup in that MOD.

The only time I would be using a feature like this is when the notification panel is rolled out, and these type of notifications can feed into there (PM's and far too annoying, especially if you have a large user base).diego898 wrote:Hello!

+1 I see no reason not to include this in the core.diego898 wrote:Hello!

Indeed, but 3.1 is "officially" released though..?MichaelC wrote:Notifications are already in 3.1, see where it saysAliasEll wrote:The only time I would be using a feature like this is when the notification panel is rolled out, and these type of notifications can feed into there (PM's and far too annoying, especially if you have a large user base).diego898 wrote:Hello!

No, but if this feature was going to be added it would be in 3.1 or later. New features get added to the latest develop version (3.1), to which notifications is already in.
