[RFC] Remove phpBB 2 Convertor

Post by MichaelC »

I suggest the converter from phpBB 2 to phpBB 3 is removed from the default package for 3.1

It has been 5 years since phpBB3 was released and most of the people that will convert have done. Those that haven't can download a separate script from phpBB.com

I agree.
with 3.1 or 3.2 we don't need to have the converter its there since long and probably i think by that time the support for converting should also be finished!
People need to move on!

+1. If we have an alternative like that (download from the website) we don't need to ship something that less than 1% of the people will ever use. I agree we should get rid of it.

Incidentally I was thinking earlier today about whether the converter was still working correctly in 3.1 tree.

Since we support 3.0 -> 3.1 migration I would say there is no reason to keep it in 3.1.

On the other side there is no reason to remove it if it is working.

I say we remove it from the 3.1 package (after all, it is meant for 2.0 -> 3.0, not 2.0 -> 3.1) and make it available via the website.

We still see support topics every week about converting from phpBB2. If it works, I would suggest leaving it. If it is sufficiently broken, then I wouldn't put much effort into fixing it.

I don't agree with this sentiment. In general. We have so many parts that we need to maintain, which is part of why we are so slow. We should seriously consider removing some of this cruft.

On topic: I don't think we need 2.0 => 3.1 conversion.
