Official Bridges

Post by ameisez »

Hi,

Somebody just post that there will be a special place for Bridges MOD http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2099771

I would like to say that the idea would be better if official bridges is available or at least part of the future plan for phpBB. From our tagline, "creating community", I guess it will better fit if we have official bridges to create community even more with other popular scripts like wordpress and joomla.

thanks :)

And your suggestion is?

If you are trying to say that the bridges released should be made by the team or be official, many of them will probably be written by current MOD authors from the phpBB Teams. We see now reason why not to accept other bridges from the community, especially if they have to meet given guidelines.
Please think before you post.

Oppss.. sorry I miss my point...

What I was trying to suggest is to include it from the main release and can be turn ON/OFF from ACP

Putting a guideline for the bridges MOD is great, don't get me wrong, that alone is highly appreciated, but personally, nothing beats the out of the box feature from the phpbb release and maintained by the team

Hope I explained it this time :) hard when you're not a native english speaker :D

One can doubt the "general benefit" of such a feature in the default package. I favor the bridges since I use a CMS and a Wiki at my site, but including all this in the default package doesn't make sense considering many people don't use a CMS.
I don't have any statistical evidence, but I recon only about half the phpBB users use it in combination with other packages. At most. Inluding all kind of bridges by default would only make it bulky.

Maintaining bridges through hooks makes much more sense IMHO. The users who need it can install it pretty easy and the users who don't need it aren't bothered with it.
Above message may contain errors in grammar, spelling or wrongly chosen words. This is because I'm not a native speaker. My apologies in advance.

The answer would be No. There is no reason, for instance, to include a MediaWiki bridge further increasing the size of the package if the site won't be using MediaWiki. In theory there would be one for Joomla!, WordPress, as well as others. Including all of them will make for a messy package. Best to keep them separate and download as needed as we have it now. They should be drop-ins for the most part anyways.

OK.. thanks

I thought that there is something new behind the announcement. but now it sounds like that the announcement is just an invitation to all MOD authors to write bridge... nothing more.

Sorry for misinterpreting the announcement.

Now I have to wonder what was the "introducing" is all about. Perhaps I would have to blame "language barrier" again :)

There has not been an official place on phpBB.com for bridges so far. By introducing a new section in the MODDB and encouraging everyone to submit bridges this is changing. And the phpBB teams are actively developing some of these bridges, for example drupal.

Just because they won't be included in the phpBB package does not mean they are not official. ;)

So it will be something like prosilver_se? Officially maintained by the team but not included in the package
