Problem backing up software

Post by Acorn »

I'm not entirely sure whether this is a problem with my board (phpbb3.0.3) or with filezilla, but hopefully someone here will know...

I've just backed up my software using filezilla, directly onto a memory stick (as I always do). Almost 200 files failed to transfer. Most of these were cache files, which I'm not bothered about, but the forum/files folder, and the avatars/upload folder also failed. I've tried transferring them separately, and some seem to have transfered the second time, but far from all of them.

I haven't had this problem before, and I do back up regularly. Does anyone have any ideas?

I tend to have this problem with FilzeZilla also. I started using CuteFTP 8, and works just fine.

Maybe your memory stick is full or there's a problem with your memory stick... try to backup it in your desktop and see if your getting any problem.

The memory stick has 252MB space left, so I don't think it's that.

However, I've just spent over half an hour installing a mod, which hasn't worked, and when I looked at the files that have supposedly been uloaded back to the server via Filezilla, none of them show recent modification dates. When I saved them I didn't get the usual question about whether I wanted to overwrite the older file, so I'm thinking this is Filezilla. I seem to remember that it was updated recently, and this is probably the first time I've used it since then. :x At least I still have all the modified files in Crimsone Editor, so hopefully all is not lost. Yet.

I'm off to look for another free ftp client. Can't afford cuteftp at the moment, unfortunately.

Ah - thank you! I always use Firefox stuff when I can, but I didn't know about FireFTP.

Believe it or not I had exactly the same problem with FireFTP, but I think I have figured out what was wrong - the permissions on the folders was set to apply only to the folders and not to the contents.

I've no idea how that happened, since I hadn't had problems before. FireFTP wouldn't let me change the permissions so I've gone back to Filezilla, but I guess there's just a setting I haven't found somewhere on FireFTP. The backup is underway yet again, and looking good so far. :)

So Filezilla, I still love you! ;)

If you have access to your webhost control panel generally cPanel you can create a backup here that will be compressed to minimise the file size and time to download your full website as a backup including databases(db) or you can choose which parts of your site you want backed up. This can be then downloaded via your browser and you can be notified once the backup is complete via email or you can enter in another ftp's details and it will backup your files to there meaning that it won't be stored on the host's server once the process is complete.

To delete these files if downloaded from the browser you will need to ftp in later and delete the backup files to free space if required.

Hi!

Sorry if this question seems off-topic. I think it is not.

I cannot use the backup script of my web hotel, because the files in the forum/cache and the forum/files folders are owned by the web server (apache) and the permissions are very strict. (My user does not have read permissions.) This problem occured after I upgraded the phpBB engine to the latest version. This causes big problems, as I cannot backup all of our web page at once, because the forum lies within the web page directory tree.

I tried asking about this in another thread a while ago but got no reply whatsoever. Do you know if there is any ongoing discussion on this topic?

Thanks for any help!
Mikael

Mikael,

Contact your webhost and obtain help from them in regards to getting your user to get read permissions. If you think this is the issue.

This may also be due to the CHMOD permissions on your webfiles. Could you please tell me what they are currently?
