They are great, really 
Faster to load, more beautiful, smaller (I hate oversized images
) and in my opinion more "useful" to use.
I'd be glad to see such a change in smilies by the way Even if I like the current ones, it'd be good to have even better ones, like the new icons.

Though I am not sure those ones will be released... Anyway, I am not as convinced for those smilies as I am for the new icons -

They don't seem to fit the old ones, but alone they're just too few.
Also, the ones with glasses are not emoticons. What kind of emotion are they showing? Also, is that a surprise expression or Munch's "The scream"?

I think the glasses dude is just a way of saying "cool".
That's how I'd use it. It's not an emoticon as such but still handy on a forum.
Now the guy with the glasses and a little beard...I got no idea on that one.
