I love phpBB and am looking forward to the release of Olympus. I started a forum back in October of last year and it is growing at a steady pace. The main problem that I am encountering is this:
Users are demanding additional features that other commercial forums packages are offering. Olympus will handle these user demands, however, being an open source project, I'm not sure if I can handle or afford the wait.
Is there anyone else in my situation? Have you moved over or considered moving over to another software package... even if it be until these guys release Olympus? Please share you views.
Best regards,
Garry

Re: How many could not wait?
We too have been dealing with this situation. Our users are asking for new features ... but we're giving them the ever-popular "wait for 3.0" answer ..
It seems somewhat pointless to spend time modding just to have it outdated soon (hopefully.) We are, however, waiting until RC1 to upgrade (like good little webmasters
) We do have dummy testboards of our forum running to get our global mods, other mods, etc used to the new theme/setup ... though very few people have access to that.

Re: How many could not wait?
Yeah, I agree. I don't want to mod phpBB 2 as I do not wan't trouble with the upgrade. I haven't even mentioned to my users that a new version of the software is going to be release becuase it is impossible to get any sort of timeframe other then the infamous, "It's ready when it's ready" or "It's done when it's done."
I want to puke every time I hear that. LOL!

Re: How many could not wait?
I am just as impatient as you guys are for 3 years, waiting...and waiting...
During my waiting, I went out to test all kinds of boards, free and commericials. All comes down to...me loving phpBB more. One thing I know for sure is waiting for phpBB3 is like waiting for Jesus Christ to return to Earth again. Hahaha! So I guess I have no choice but be patient. I know Jesus is gonna come just as I know phpBB3 RC will surely be release.

LMAO! I feel the same my friend. As a matter of fact, some days I feel like it is going to be JC that personally delivers phpBB 3.

That's what MODs are for.
Or you could tell them to get a life, because it's just a forum.

I hear that alot. For me...
Mods are annoying. I have over 50 mods installed in my board, which becomes really annoying where there are requiring updates to be done. What I like best about phpBB3 is that they keep it simple to meet all my needs and not bloated like other board scripts.

Exactly! That is why I am waiting.
This is not just a hobby though... and that is why it is so hard to wait.

If phpBB had become commercial, the development may move faster just like how vBulletin goes. But I'm glad it isnt a commerical product.

Because phpBB is open source you are welcomed to add/change/remove features as you see fit.
