Depends on the server. ;) If you're on shared hosting, to run the conversion on one's local PC could well be faster, though if you're on dedicated hosting, less one's local PC is some beefy multi-processor Xeon/Opteron with fast HDDs... running it on the server is far better. ;)

Hehe, oh ya...

The last guy who's board I converted had a meager 50,000 query limit per hour set in by his host, as you can imagine it was pretty much impossible to do it on his server.

Ok. I want to say Congrats to the development team. I just converted my forum to test out the script. I have a heavily moded forum and it converted the forum with just 1 error. All 15685 posts, 2898 topics, and 983 members cme through without a hitch.

Great job.

ARGH! I hate it when hosts do that... my first webhost had a 50,000 query limit and when I tried to restore a phpBB2 database that only had about 10k posts, I ran into that limit... so I had to wait an hour.

I found a way around it though, I found if I deleted the old user and recreated it, I had another 50,000 limit (being the hacker that I am ;) )

This isn't Microsoft, one error is more than expected; maybe you should tell what kind of error was it (given it was a system failure).

Hehe, ya, we could have done it that way(the guy who owns it has a whole bunch of users and if he ever goes over the limit he just switches what user will be used for the forums access). But that would not have worked so well with my script the way it was(before I made it do a limited number at a time with the Insert Ignore Into).

Well, I'm just trying the converter. I watched the progress via MySqlAdmin. 32K posts in 1300 topics from about 50 users were converted in 4 or 5 minutes, but now, after half an hour later I still have no users converted in the olympus-database and the install page ("Conversion in Progress") still shows the sandglass. The process looks frozen to me.

In the ACP I can see: 1 post, 1 topic, 1 user
In the forum administration all the converted forums are shown.

Now, having resynchronized one forum, 1033 posts are shown, but 1045 are in the same forum of phpbb2 (inactive, so must be identical)

.. and now on the main page of the ACP in the statistics -124 posts are shown.

The conversion process still looks frozen to me (now 15' later again).

Three trials with Opera. Hm. Tried it then with IE6 and everything worked fine. :D

Just to make sure, this convertor compatible to change phpBB2 2.0.21 to 3.0 beta 3?

Of course it's risky to use beta software on a live community, but it's a small one anyways and have nothing to lose with proper backups. And I feel like playing around with phpBB again now it's near release. Can't imagine anymore I expected this one to pop up in 2004/2005. It looks absolutely great.
