the reason i'm hoping for RC1 being next is the update path -- even if security is not an issue for you, you can't really go live with the beta right now, because there's no guarantee that there will an update path to RC, and you might be stuck with your data.
having said that, it would really surprise me if there were no update path from the last beta to RC1 -- given that the last couple of betas have all had one. would really *beep* off people who went live on a beta (and thus possibly were able to provide valuable input in terms of bugreports), wouldn't it?
Suspecting RC1 very soon!

It would also serve them right for ignoring the warnings about using a beta live. It would also provide a level playing field for all the RC bugs. They would know for sure that everyone was starting from the same core set of files.
They've already said that no support will be given for beta>RC1 updated forums so those people are already out of the support loop.

On that note, wouldn't the phpbb team be shooting themselves in the foot since they went live with a beta version? You would think that they would need an upgrade path too.
Re: Suspecting RC1 very soon!
Having an upgrade path is something else than supporting an update path. Such an update path might be completely unsuitable for sites other than phpbb.com.

Considering it's the developers that write the update/upgrade packages in the first place, they by definition would also know the software well enough to do updates manually, ie: in the absence of any such "hand holding" scripts. Or in other words, if your code kung-fu is strong, by all means use CVS as you'd be clued up enough to un-FUBAR anything that may happen, however, you'd be on your own.

If you know how to make an upgrade from one version to another one, you may run Beta in live environment too. But when in troubles, phpBB.com staff would not make a support for you.
