A generic challenge question (What do you see in the picture) that has an unlimited number of responses and is adaptable to each forum would give as many possible responses as there are forums.
You can make your image and response as simple or as complex as you like. As long as the Admin is able to set the correct response then any image can be used. For example: An Equestrian forum can use horse related images, an entomology forum can use insect related images, Star Trek related forums could use a image of Picard; the possibilities are limitless.

And just change the question and answer every month or even every week. If it was in the ACP, it would be really easy to do often.
You are right imho, If the Admin could change the picture and answer whenever needed through the ACP it would be very easy.
Questions: Is this pratical? Is it already in a mod? Do you see a down side?

Back to the origional idea; Kellanved would this work?

Nope, this would work for individual forums, but not for a standard distribution.
The reason is quite simple: all bots would "know" the answers for all the default questions about a week after its release.
But there are no default questions just one. it is the answers that are infinite with the correct answer set by the forum admin to an image that they uploaded.

But if it was configurable so admins could change the images to their own, in a very simple manner, each forum would have a different 'answer'. You would only have to make a picture in MSpaint (words, images, a code, anything) and upload it with something else to configure what the accepted answer is.
I understand your point that the bots would learn the defaults very quickly but if it was simple for the end users to change it then it becomes much more difficult and everyone images would be different.

Your fix fine for a tech savvy user but I don't think that's a mainstream solution. Everything should be really simple.

If you can un load an avatar you can upload an image to the security question, then type the correct answer in the response field. This is all that would be needed to set the image and response. An admin should be able to do that.

It is really simple.
Say for instance you wanted the accepted answer to be 'house'.
Open MS paint. Select the pencil.
Draw a rough picture of a house.
That's not an image a bot can easily recognise because your house, my house and 100 peoples other houses would all look a little bit different. But the answer is still house. The thing is the image can be what ever you want it to be. You could draw it, you could use clipart, you could google for an image of it. As long as you know how to upload a gif or a jpg, you can change the image to be whatever you want.

IMO a solution that requires a user to open MS paint (What if I have a mac?), draw something and upload the pic isn't simple enough. I suspect the dev team wants a solution my dad could easily figure out.
