2.0 to 3.0 Mod compatibility

Post by SpilltheBeans »

I don't know much about 3.0 but I'm wondering how easy would it be to make the 2.0 mods work with 3.0? It probably depends on how the mods were written, but in general, is 3.0 that much of a departure from 2.0 that the 2.0 mods will have to be entirely rewritten?

There's such a large repository of 2.0 mods that we'd all hate to lose when 3.0 comes out. Of course, some of the 2.0 mods are now features in 3.0 but many are not. So is a 2.0 mod -> 3.0 mod a relatively easy transfer? Anyone who's familiar with the CVS, please answer.

phpBB3 don't needs many mods, it has a lot of functions included
attach, subforums, supermoderator, etc...

there are plenty of mods that people may need.

ad mod, cash mod, RPG mod, quick reply, etc. sure the more standard features (for the most part) have been adopted as standard functionality out of the box, but that doesn't mean that anywhere near all the mods out there have been rendered useless (once they're updated).

Unless it's a very simple MOD, phpBB2 MODs won't be usable in 3 since there's been so many changes.
If there's a MOD you really love in 2 and want it for 3, go ahead and let the author know so he or she can be thinking about porting it to Olympus. ;)

Think about this-- MOD[ifications] are changes to the 2.0.x codebase. Since Olympus' codebase is entirely different, yes, most, if not all, MODs must be rewritten for Olympus, even utilizing new functions and methods introduced. ;-)

3.0 is a TOTAL AND COMPLETE rewrite of code from 2.0. Unless it's a trivial change that can be found in a LOT of software, then you will have to change around the code. If nothing else, you'll have to change variable names. ;)

It would be great if PHPBB3 had the AJAX spell checker integrated.
Also, I remember reading somewhere that phpbb3 will have a whole different mod system where it will be very easy to add mods, also that it will have a portal page, can anyone confirm this?

Neither of those features have been confirmed. So, unless there are secret features that they haven't told us about (which was rumored at one point), they are not in Olympus.

I believe easymod like functionality was confirmed NOT to be in vanilla olympus
