I apologize if I've posted this in the wrong place. I looked throughout phpbb.com, and these forums, and didn't see anything that stood out as the right answer.
I'm a fairly accomplished php developer, I've used phpbb for over 4 years, and would like to help with development.
How can I help? Are there tasks to be worked on that I can submit patches for, etc?
Assist in development?

Re: Assist in development?
All development is done by the dev team, which is invitation only. If you had come a few months back, you would have been able to participate in the community coding projects, however, I believe all the projects are now taken.
Contribution can be made by waiting patiently for beta, and then when beta comes (at an undisclosed, and unknown date) testing and reporting bugs.

Re: Assist in development?
For "looking everywhere", you sure did a good job of missing the "COMMUNITY CODING" headline(s) on phpbb.com …

Three things:VxJasonxV wrote: For "looking everywhere", you sure did a good job of missing the "COMMUNITY CODING" headline(s) on phpbb.com …
1. I didn't say I looked everywhere. I said I looked throughout the main forums, and these forums, and didn't see anything that stood out. I even apologized if I posted in the wrong place.
2. That post was five months ago, and as Lastof said, the projects are all taken, which I would have assumed after a last call five months ago.
3. Nice way to treat someone that is politely trying to help the project.
Elitist development model, no way to show your value to the dev team, and now flames for asking to help?
I'm starting to understand the negativity towards phpbb now.

Not to seem rude, but if you somehow feel there's negativity towards phpbb, why would you want to help with coding????iamsureiamsure wrote:

Re: Assist in development?
Because I feel that phpbb is extremely well-designed - from a user point of view. I wanted to help improve it, and help the dev team acheive their goals.wingnut144 wrote:Not to seem rude, but if you somehow feel there's negativity towards phpbb, why would you want to help with coding????iamsureiamsure wrote:

Is this seriously the way people wanting to help are treated? Being asked to defend their decision, after being told to wait, and then being flamed?

Re: Assist in development?
Our "elitist dev" team as you so kindly put it helps ensure security and quality of code. This is not an uncommon practice in the Open Source movement with the linux kernel development team adopting similar levels of closedness. Thats not to say the team is closed to newcommers, I'm saying you can't just waltz in and do your thing.
The best way to get started is to prove yourself, that doesn't necessarily mean working on a CCP, developers in the past have been invited after being helpful and just supplying quality improvements, instead of whinging and making a scene that they can't.
Security is a big part of phpBB, and I hope you can understand the position. If you really do want to become a full time developer, all is not lost, your just going about it the wrong way. Be proactive
There is also the saying "too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the broth", meaning taking on too many new developers has the potential to further delay Olympus.

phpBB, its open source, become involved, write a modification!

Re: Assist in development?
I asked for the criteria to do so. None were given except for waiting.Davidls wrote: Our "elitist dev" team as you so kindly put it helps ensure security and quality of code. The only other suggestions given were CCP's (all taken, and none pointed out as needed).
So I'll repeat the question: If the criteria is to prove yourself, what development goals (bug, feature add, fix) need to be done, so I can work on them?
I did presume that it wasn't by birthright, which is why I asked what I could contribute to, to show my value. (leading to the potential for working with the dev team).Davidls wrote: The best way to get started is to prove yourself, that doesn't necessarily mean working on a CCP, developers in the past have been invited after being helpful and just supplying quality improvements
I'm not whinging. I'm replying. I politely asked a fair question, and each response has made a rude comment, attack, or asked me to explain myself.Davidls wrote: instead of whinging and making a scene that they can't.
I don't actually. Clear and defined items to work on means those issues get fixed. Those issues being fixed means the security improves. Having more people to fix those issues is a good thing. In all the other open source projects I've worked in, having people willing to help, and do what needs to be done isn't a net negative.Davidls wrote: Security is a big part of phpBB, and I hope you can understand the position.
I'm offering to help. I can code. I just need to know what the dev team needs done, so I can work on that.
I've been proactive. I asked what the priorities were before coding. Or are you saying I need to pick random items, develop solutions without knowing the intentions of the developers, submit them, and hope they are included?Davidls wrote: If you really do want to become a full time developer, all is not lost, your just going about it the wrong way. I would hope your development process is more orderly than that.
Not if you have clear items that need to be accomplished, effective leadership, and consistent coding guidelines. I know you have the latter, I hope you have effective leadership, and I'm asking (again) for the items that need to be accomplished.Davidls wrote: There is also the saying "too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the broth", meaning taking on too many new developers has the potential to further delay Olympus.
I'm doing everything I can here to help. I've gotten nothing but negativity, attacks, and requests for me to "wait".

Re: Assist in development?
I apologize.
I see that my efforts are best spent elsewhere.
Good luck with the upcoming release.

The Olympics are being delayed? I don't get it. I swear they've been on TV all week. Have I been watching reruns of the last Winter Olympics maybe? What's going on?
