RSS feed?

Post by chrisMc »

I tried in vain to search for this, but apparently I'm not allowed.
Sorry but you are not permitted to use the search system.
Will 3.0.0 have any type of RSS feed for the board? I think that with more and more mail clients and browsers supporting RSS, it would be a great feature that reduce bandwidth for a lot of boards (RSS will use fewer bytes than a full-blown browser session for those "just checking posts"). Granted, it would be an easy thing to add with all content stored in SQL, but it would be cool to have the little orange "XML" button next to posts, forums, or even the whole board (subscribe to different sections based on board traffic). Anyhow, if its not included perhaps I'll work on a plugin. Can't wait until Olympus hits final! Keep up the good work!

Some sites have reported that they have had bandwidth problems since it was added, because people will set their RSS clients to check every 10 minutes. Bandwidth spikes at the top and bottom of the hour have also been reported, making things slow for those actually on the sites.

Besides all of that, there is the real issue that many sites have numerous forums and each of them has numerous threads. It would end up being fairly pointless to monitor things that way in even a moderately busy board.
You can never go home again... but I guess you can shop there.

I'll make one for 3 if it doesn't have one.

Takes about 60 seconds to copy and paste the code i used for the 2 one.

another 3 mins to update the tags

This could be resolved by caching the rss for 1-2 hours or more, maybe setting the default to 3 hours and letting people know within the rss feed description ?

Caching
Letting the output being dumped in memory or in a file and not renewing it before a certain amount of time.

Could this idea not be added in a similar way to Jabber, except instead of sending to a user as Jabber message it does it as an RSS item that they can then see later?

I agree that it would have to be minimal information sent though, in a similar way to searching by posts, no images (non-replaced smilies), only so many characters. If you want to see the full thing then you go to the forum topic (via a link).
Images in sigs! please.

Subscribed topics RSS

I think an RSS feed for each forum would be too much for some sites, but I think the option should be there and the administrator should make the call to enable it or not.

What I'd like to have is at least the possibility to check via RSS the topics I am subscibed to.

I'm sure it would make a good MOD - but the feature list is closed for 3.0.

If you wish to suggest it for 3.2, please use the feature request link on the index page.
