But wait, I JUST got phpBB 2.0.10..!

Post by AYHJA »

I've been reading this site, trying to be careful about the things I say or ask...When it dawned on me...

Everybody seems to be REALLY excited about phpbb 2.2, I know that I am...But, what I just thought about, was something else...I JUST got my forum running, not even a month ago...And, two weeks or so before that, I couldn't have told you the first thing about phpbb...

The only reason that I'm interested in upgrading, is so that I can start from scratch with the base product, and create my own version of the board...But, damn...

That's a lot of work, especially for somebody new to phpbb...

So now, I'm not so excited anymore...I mean, the new features that I can see here, are great additions, but undoubtedly, the base version of phpbb 2.2 will be missing many of the spoils I've become accustomed to with my pre hacked version...There are definite tradeoffs, but wow...That's alot....It's kind of a "If it ain't broke" kind of thing for me...

Is there anybody NOT planning on upgrading when the new version is released..?

I won't upgrade my living boards until I finish (so developp and test) the feature I need for the site, which will require probably 3 or 4 monthes. As I don't plan to start before the first fixes package for my site, I think 6 monthes to 1 year after the first release is a reasonable date.

I think I'll keep sticked to 2.0.10 too. Simpler coding. I'm used to it. And I'm not gonna edit all mods and re-install them so it may take loong time before I finally upgrade :)

Not me............as soon as the first formal release beta comes out----it's all mine!

I've been running the CVS just to test the new features..............The new phpBB admin's panel will especially give those IPB people a good run for their money. Seriously, PhpBB has come a very long way.

v2.2 is vastly and incredibly different from the current v2.0.10. Besides, I'm not sure if the deveopers will provide support for both phpbb v2.2 (once it comes out) and v2.0.10. :)
Think that the developers have secretly stopped working on PhpBB v2.2? Think again........see the latest progress HERE:

Wasn't there a lack of support for moving from one of the 2.0 betas to RC? I could be wrong, but I thought there was some significant issue that prevented such moves.
You can never go home again... but I guess you can shop there.

To clarify something, it has been stated many times that when 2.2.x is released we will continue to provide support for 2.0.x as well. This is not going to be like the transition from 1.4.x to 2.0.x where there was a complete change and known issues with 1.4.x that made supporting both difficult.

(On 2.0.x there was certainly an issue with the "pre-Beta" to later versions. That is all in the documentation that comes with 2.0.x still)

Not really, but I face the same issue than the phpBB dev. team (and quite everybody I think) : it is not a full-time job :).

I also will be one of the people that do not instantly upgrade to phpBB2.2, as I also have a pre-hacked 2.0.10 board.

Sure, I will download a copy and probably have it running as a test, I am also sure that the people that make the pre-hacked phpBBs will have some kind of upgrade script as well (although it won't be for some time).

I will try to upgrade the 2.0.10 I have but I am pretty sure it won't work or some MODs will conflict but I will also do my best to try and resolve these conflicts.
