multiple styles...

Post by Galga »

I was wondering... since so many people asked for a new phpBB skin with 2.2, & since many others asked for the same old good skin, couldn't be a good idea to make multiple skins available from the beginning?

something like 4 - 5 different skins, maybe done by the best artists whose skins for phpbb2.1 were approved in the database manager

couldn't it be a good idea? :D

edit:
moreover doing so, you'll speed up skinning for phpBB2.2 cause letting those people work on it before it's released will give them the possibility to understand the recent changes of the code & work on it immediately, so that when phpBB 2.2 will come out there will be not only 5 different default skins , but there will also be more people who already know how to make skins & so they'll be able to make them faster :D

Maybe, maybe not.

Designers should understand HTML/CSS anyway and current estimates it's a few hours work to port a style over and for it to be functional. Additional tweaking is up to said designer and how much time they wish to spend.

Trust someone who has wrote some mods for phpBB 2.0 : having many styles included in the vanilia package would be just a nightmare (not mentioning the extra download size it would require). Having only one official style in the package, and some others done by the phpBB graphic team downloadable at phpBB.com sounds like being a far better idea, even for CSS style-type only, and even for basic install/runtime support.

Installation is no longer templated, IIRC.

But still, multiple skins would be confusing and lack the phpBB professional touch.

Installation process has never been. But installation gets over simply "Install the board and roam through the ACP" :). (ie if you don't see how or where, think of your usercp, and some other places like posting, travelling though the forums tree and FAQs, etc.)

I personally think there should be 2 versions of 2.2, just my opinion... One with just the default skin (subSilver, or whatever they choose), and one with that and maybe 5 skins to select from. Everyone would love to have fully-functioning skins so that their board doesn't have to look like everyone else's, and doesn't screw up when they put on mods.

I doubt this one post will do anything, but it could be pretty cool if there were two options. If someone didn't want the extra download/upload time, or thinks that it's "unprofessional" to have more options for the users, they wouldn't have to download that version.

If there were multiple default skins in certain packs, users wouldn't have to upload individual skins, and they wouldn't have to (although easy) do the setups. The default skins would have to be considered for every major mod, and everything could be great!

Just my 2 cents :P
