Events System

Post by Roberdin »

A lot has been mentioned about this cryptic "Events System". As far as I can ascertain, it's a system whereby something happens, which automatically triggers something else - eg, a person gets 450 posts and the events system then causes that user to be added to a group.
But what will the limits of this system be? Or are they as yet undecided? Won't it cause extreme load, as every action that happens to a user will have to be analysed by the ES?

I assume that you've decided not to comment so that other boards can't copy your idea and not that you're too lazy/don't like me? :P ;)

Well at least it'll be a surprise. :)

I doubt it would cause extreme load, in all likelihood only so many 'events' will be possible to test (by default), I don't see how they could have it otherwise. For example one event might be 'Post count change' in which case posting.php and mod scripts that delete posts or move posts to a place where they cease to be counted will actually check for 'Post count change' type events. Things like viewing a topic or forum will most likely not have any default events associated with them.

Who knows, if the events system becomes really sophisticated it could re-write specified parts of a script as events are added/removed, thereby removing the need for an if to check for an event first. Who knows, only psoTFX really knows and he isn't too chatty about it, and likely doesn't have all the details figured out yet either. We'll have to wait for a while into M4 ;)

That means at this point devs doesn't want to comment anything regarding an events system, as they have very clearly stated :).
