Why is it called php 2.2 and not 3.0?

Post by cybertinus »

Hello Everybody,

I have tried to use the search function but I got an SQL error, so please don't blame me if this is already asked.
I was wondering why this is called php 2.2 and not 3.0? It is an next major release, because it is an completer rebuild (correct me if i'm wrong). If you follow the "rules" of version numbers then version 2.2 should only contain a few new features of php 2.0.6. So why is this called 2.2 and not 3.0?

We're talking true version numbers here, not Marketecture™ version numbers.

The 2.x was a rewrite from ground up, and 2.2.x is a feature addition and performance improvement release of 2.0.x. As long as this is true, there'll be 2.4.x, 2.6.x, 2.8.x, 2.10.x, and so on (keeping in line with Linux kernel versioning).

Should there be a rewrite from ground up yet again, then that would be phpBB3.x.x

ok, thank you for the very clear explanation. Obviosly I was wrong that I thougth that 2.2 is a complete rebuild :). And I'm familair with the linux kernel version numbering. 2.uneven is a beta, 2.even is an official release.

On 2.1 it is the milestone. Usually it is the revision number though. Revisions are bug fixes and other things like that.
