I know I'll get flamed for this... but I hit a road block halfway through The Two Towers. After reading the Wheel of Time books, and loads of Orson Scott Card, finally picking up LOTR was like a long-postponed classic. I was psyched. Yes, i thought, this will r0x0rz. The first book was great. I loved it.
(Don't read below if you haven't read the books. highlight it, it's in white)
[color=white3ea57] I applauded Tolkien for killing Gandalf, a very important character. Then, the second book started to be like a battle for me. I was trudging through it, blah blah, orcs, ents, whatever, and then Gandalf reappears. [/color3ea57]
So, that's my main problem with the books. Other than that, the characters sort of annoy me, theres too much "why me" and "i'm scared" although the hobbits can be quite funny... I just couldn't read any more.

Gee, PSO, don't scare him
TheFlib, in my opinion Tolkien's strength was not the story itself but the world and the characters he created. If you read the appendix (after "Return of the King") or as Paul suggests "the Silmarilion" you will find good explainations why character you mentioned did what he did.

And as a side note, I just noticed London gets the World Premiere of the first film
