Well if you're having ranks, why not Karma? Karma is just a more advanced ranking system that (theoretically) works on quality of posts, not quantity. the points mod, on the other hand, is nothing to do with a forum - it's just added in for some reason.

Wrong : it is not a ranking system, but a general censure system : that's very different. It doesn't work at all on quality of post, but on judgement onto a poster by other posters. It is also different from an ignore list, as it implies more than two users ignoring each others.

The computer can't make a judgement on the quality of posts, so it relies on users to make the judgement for it. I'll admit it needs some tweaking but I think that it was designed to be implemented as a sort of ranking system. It doesn't have to act as a censuring system, I'll ensure the default "view posts with minimum karma" setting is into the red spectrum on my board certaintly.

Once more : the karma isn't a measure on posts, but a measure on posters. It is a censure system, as it hides blindly the posts from a user (blindly meaning without active participation of the user acting : he doesn't take the decision - as for the ignore list - to hide the posts from a particular user. Actually, he won't even figure that some posts are hidden). The rank is only an information with no particular treatement based on. The karma determines a censure action, therefore is no more a rank.

By my side, I think this was more an attempt to "mimic" the card ban system thought by Niels, in a slightly different way. As for the attachment feature, it is a feature that makes me very uncomfortable with some choices in phpBB 2.1.

Well hopefully the system will be modified to make a judgement on posts, not posters.

Still, it can be disabled, like the attachments - it's only a few lines, you won't notice the slowdown. :)

Then it wouldn't be a Karma system any more.

m'kay, I tried really hard to understand this thread...and I played with the Karma a bit.

Just so I'm clear on this... Voting on a person's karma effects how everyone on the board see's their karma?

This wouldn't work well on my board...I have too many members who would vote other member's karma down out of spite. It would be like some horrible popularity contest...feelings would get hurt...there would be drama and more stress than I already deal with

Though I realize if voting on a person's karma only effected how one person saw their karma than it would be the same as simply using the ignore feature...however it is sometimes difficult to get members to use the ignore feature.
I can't delete my signature.

Worth than this : it affects how the people see the poster's posts, meaning too low karma will result in hiding silently all posts from this user.
