vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"?
I just noticed that on the admin panel for vBulletin 3.0.0 Release Candidate 2 they refer to their tags as "BB Code". What's the deal with this? Is it a trademark, or is it what most board software call their tags?
Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
I don't think that's a copyright infringement. "BBCode" simply means bulletin board code; vBulletin, phpBB, Invision, Ikon, UBB, etc. are all bulletin board systems. It's more of a generic name for mark up language in BB systems.
If I'm wrong, I welcome corrections.

Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
I think the tem used by vBulletin is vBcode, and not bbcode : you should recheck. However, it is more a generic term, the point is the user has to understand it, whatever the tool he uses.

Ptirhiik_ is correct. vB 3 RC2 does in fact refer to it as vB Code :)

Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
IIRC the term "BBCode" was first coined by UBB ... it's since been used by many "forum" systems.
Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
Saying a Bulliten board cant actually use "BB" whatever, is just like not letting a car company use the word car really...
Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
Although their products tend to use "UBBCode" at present......psoTFX wrote:IIRC the term "BBCode" was first coined by UBB ... it's since been used by many "forum" systems.
And that is one that you could argue has links with one particular board, but since BB (Bulletin Board) is generic, you can't really make that argument.
Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
Also... there's nothing out there called "BB" is there...?
phpBB isnt quite there...

Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
Yeah, they call it vB Code on the board itself, but on the admin panel it's BB Code. But it's a moot point I guess. And phpBB's better anyway, so yeah.Trek wrote:Ptirhiik_ is correct. vB 3 RC2 does in fact refer to it as vB Code :)
Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"
Yup, UBB first coined the name. Back when they were the daddy of all web based BB systems.
