I was thinking of this : the phpBB 2.1 has really nothing to deal with phpBB 2.0 now : all the code has been rework, and there will be no compliancy with previous mods or add-ons because of many points : the templates have been renamed, the auth system and posting/publication process dramaticely extended, so the board performances, data structures changed, and so.
In other words, it is no more the same product than phpBB 2.0.x : wouldn't it be appropriate to name it 3.0.0 at released time ?
version 2 still appropriate for phpBB ?

erm, no, because not all the code has been reworked ... thanks, but we're sticking with 2.2.

heheh 'phpBB 2004'
2.2 sounds cool to me tho it does seem more like an upgrade to current 2.0.x versions than totally new board software.

phpBB 2004, sounds more like a M$ numbering scheme, with Windows/Office 2000, and 2003 :)

They've been trying to drop the year since they released Windows XP, although curiously, they still have Windows Server 2003.
