Updating a skin would be mostly copying and pasting since you already have the skin's base. It may involve creating some new buttons thought.

2.2 templates are completely different from 2.0, so copying/pasting won't work.

From old themes designers will keep only images (and will have to add few new ones) and they would know exact colors for certain items. All html will be rewritten.

So updating 2.0 style to 2.2 will be about half of job of creating completely new style.

..unless style is subClone - in that case designer would need to change only colors and change colors for images.

I don't get it.
You can still use the same code you have I mean plain HTML excluding the {language} and <!--- These -->. You have the skin's code ands you need to move those around and add new ones to fir the same skin. Get it?

Just to clarify this statement from my own point of view...

The HTML could be reused for a fair portion of the board if you really wanted, but it'd require so many tweaks and additions, plus a rewrite of all the template variables, plus file structure changes, that it would probably take less time to start from scratch.

Wouldn't the naming issues be more pertinent to trademark law? If they copied the code in large portions then wouldn't that be the copyright infringement no matter what they named it?

I'm asking because i'm interested btw, not just being picky...
