Is the styles system complete?

Post by Jay »

here's my question about styling in 2.2

the thing is i really want to create a style for my forums (i'm currently waiting for 2.2 to come out to launch a new look for my site).. however, i don't want to create a style and have to change it over and over and over before at least a beta or a RC comes out for 2.2.. so i guess my question could be answered best by paul... how stable are the styles? do you see them changing much before a beta or a RC for 2.2? or do you think it is safe to go ahead and create a new style for 2.2?

thanks :D

I doubt they'll be 'set' until the RC comes out, there are still things to be added or re-worked. For example private messages I believe have no template for example. The Karma system isn't done and could well change and such.
Images in sigs! please.

Some variables will change and as not all features are complete, new ones will certainly come, but working with the current set should be pretty safe.

When the final one is out can I use templates I make, now or is it just for practise?

Maybe. At this point in time there are still no guarantees that the styles system is stable, it may still change

I been making styles for my mod and the Style object/system seems to be stable and pretty much complete to me. If anything is to change i would think it would be the variables in the template files because of the features been added and bugs being fixed. Other than that i think its safe to say that it is stable. So if you are working on a mod then the tempalte for that mod would still work, but i woudn't recommend to start changing the phpbb templates as they might change or add new variables. Unless u are willing to keep track of the changes in each snapshot and edit your templates as need it.

Or, heed my advice, don't make any MOD or Template 'till Olympus is in the RC stages. ^_~ Things can still change, the template system could change drastically causing any to go corrupt (besides the default Olympus comes with) and such...

(FYI: I am talking about the MODs and Templates if any of you question about it.)
Someplace where it's dark, someplace where it's quiet, I feel at home... I have nowhere to go any longer, as that's what I desire.

I am willing to bet fair money that it will not change. It produces very optimized code, unlike the 2.0.x series, and is really fast. The latest changes to it were bug fixes and a small feature addition. The large compiling part of the code is not updated often, the method of storage (in terms of template variables, you still have a tplvar which is nested the exact same way) is more or less unchanged from 2.0.x except for the caching part. The template engine is one of the few pieces of code that share a healthy chunk of similar code with 2.0.x. Then again, I can't read minds or the future. For all I know, it could change resulting in a total redesign of the entire board.
