On a technical note, that editor is using Java, not Javascript.

This appears to work in firebird now. :)
Doesn't work in OmniWeb, IE Mac or Safari.

I already have three browsers installed - I'm not about to install yet another in order to use something like this!

If you'd read the original quote by dhn and/or the requirements on that page, you'd realise that they aren't compatible browsers.
Apart from that, I don't see anyone forcing the use of that down your throat, so quit moaning.

Lol - I meant that a WYSIWYG textarea wasn't that important to me.

As long as it degrades gracefully then I'm not really fussed what you do. I wasn't moaning at you guys, merely pointing out (for what it's worth) that the so-called "compatible" script wasn't working for me. Didn't mean to come out like I was complaining!

Keep up the good work, guys. This board's going to be excellent :D

That's not the question and I really think that this feature will be one of the most important innovation for future releases of any BB.

It will remove the last really "archaic" feature of current BBs which is the smilies and BBCodes/tags system.

Nearly 95% of the browsers used nowdays are IE or Netscape/Mozzila/Firefox and these browsers support these new WYSIWYG editors, so I think it's time to switch on one of them, even if phpBB (as vB3) should keep a classic editor if an exotic/incompatible browser is used or JS is disabled.

I tested some of them (on IE/Mozilla/Firefox) and they really work great!
I hope the phpBB 2.2 dev team will really consider adding this feature :)

If it could be added in an optional way and didn't add too much bloat, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this at all. If something like this was implemented, would it be be cached with the template to reduce server load?
