Ok, not really.
But how about a conversion team?
As in, a group of devs that write nothing but various other forum conversion solutions?
On thing lacks in ALL discussion software is extensive conversion tools.
Conversion tools are a gateway drug to phpBB.
I understand we have a generic engine, but it lacks several other systems.
What do you think.

Re: Fork phpBB
I think I'd rather the main developers concentrated on the core product.
Anyway, there is already a convertor team of sorts, but they are all volunteers who write convertors for particular software that they know or have access to. Of course what this generally means is that the major software has convertors, but some of the less well known ones don't.
Of course, I have no intention of producing convertors for 2.2 anytime soon, I'll stick with getting them working with 2.0.x

Re: Fork phpBB
Anyone is free to write a convertor script on their own and submit it (if its for a board not written already).

oh yeah? Well fork you too!libertate wrote:Ok, not really.
As noted, we do have people working on convertors ... though they are completely independent from the development group itself. Ashe did of course write the UCS which we will hopefully deploy for the upgrade system from 2.0.x to 2.2.x. It will also no doubt be updated to enable convertor writers an "easy" path for handling 2.2libertate wrote:But how about a conversion team?
Re: Fork phpBB
I was not thinking the phpBB core team get involved with conversion tool development. The only thing we would need from them is the basic data layout, and potential directions in the future for the same.I think I'd rather the main developers concentrated on the core product.
So.... 'people' are not working on this...we do have people working on convertors [...] Of course, I have no intention of producing convertors for 2.2 anytime soon...
Can we use a spoon, in a pinch?there is no fork.

Re: Fork phpBB
Erm, there are people working on convertors ... Just not as active as phpBB development.
Re: Fork phpBB
If you are meaning there is no-one working on convertors to 2.2, well you shouldn't really be surprised
It's still a work in progress, and there is absolutely no point in trying to work on something that interacts with a moving target. Once it hits Release Candidate stage and data formats are fairly fixed, people might start looking at it, but there will always be the option to go forum X->2.0.x->2.2 when it is released if convertors for it do not exist.
Re: Fork phpBB
So people can seamlessly migrate their data from another forum software to phpBB.
