On the surface it may seem that way - while the developers may not be majorly partaking in the audit itself, chances are they are the ones who will be assessing the results and implementing the necessary changes in 2.x, and subsequently may also be altering some of the 3.0 code in conjunction with this effort. So you may want to add a couple more months to your (personal) estimates of a release date for 3.0.the_dan wrote:OddDuck wrote: With the announcement of the security audit for phpbb 2, I doubt we'll see a phpbb 3 release this year.
Therefore I think the 3.0 developers are not partaking majorly in this. With this announcement I want to give you some more information regarding phpBB's security. psoTFX (Paul S. Owen, Project Manager) initiated and brought forward the idea and concept of a complete security audit of the 2.0.x codebase. We introduced some top-notch security people, phpBB-Modders and very talented people from our teams to participate in this audit. We intend to implement the changes necessary - and also fixing the found issues, hopefully giving the now very aged codebase (it is still on a technical level from three years ago) a lift and bringing it up-to-date with security mechanisms and techniques which are common nowadays.
Release date?

Re: Release date?
I persoanlly think it will be 4-6 months at best before 3.0 comes out. I have tested the cvs.. It is nice.
Re: Release date?
Maybe we can take the call for new support team members as a sign that we could see a beta in under a month. But I don't think that will be the case. So I guess I'll just go with the more reliable "When it's ready"
Re: Release date?
I imagine that such an audit will take several months - By which point I'm guessing (hoping?) that 3.0 will be in Beta. The necassary changes and fixes can then be applied to 2.0.x, and to the 3.0 codebase. Equally, that guess could be wildly innacurate, but I'm waiting to see what this anncouncement that will develop renewed interest in 3.0 will be.rivaldo wrote:On the surface it may seem that way - while the developers may not be majorly partaking in the audit itself, chances are they are the ones who will be assessing the results and implementing the necessary changes in 2.x, and subsequently may also be altering some of the 3.0 code in conjunction with this effort. I'm hoping theres more to it than applications for styles & support, and this security audit.
Re: Release date?
With the rate of updates to 2.0, I would say they are no where near to completion.
Re: Release date?
release this year is not the question, as it is practically impossible. even beta this year is highly doubtful.OddDuck wrote: With the announcement of the security audit for phpbb 2, I doubt we'll see a phpbb 3 release this year.![]()
the real (and, methinks, reasonable) request (see the wake the zombie message) was not for a "release date" statement, but rather for an update, which was not given in ~4 months.

Re: Release date?
release this year:
seeing as it is july, and assumming a reasonable release cycle, as in alfa, beta, rc1, rc2 and then release, even if beta will start this week there just isn't enough time.
as to beta:
if you follow the cvs repository (i do) you will see that stating "1.5 developers" is a gross exaggeration.
there is only one developer, acydburn, and it seems that he is also the main developer/maintainer of the "legacy" phpbb 2.0, and i suspect he has a day job, to boot.
(((THIS IS A "SIDE": it was stated on this board, that the dev team is not open to new additions at this time. i dont know if there are any available volunteers, but in the ~3 years phpbb3 is being developed there were a few. )))
if you look at the progress that was made this year (again, judging by cvs commits), and the size of the "todo" list, i think beta this year, though definitely a possibility, requires healthy ammount of optimism.
just the way i see it, of course. i will be more than happy to be proved wrong on both.

Re: Release date?
I'm afraid some of you are being overly negative -- I don't really see such a security review as slowing Olympus down, but as a result of Olympus being delayed in the past. If Olympus had been done (or even beta) late last year, many of these recent security flaws would probably never had been found, at least in the 2.0.x line. They are reviewing and "giving the codebase a lift" because they feel that it has been too long since phpBB 2.0.x was designed for it to be able to be as secure, as, say Olympus.
I'm speculating too, but I can assure you that the goal of this review isn't to slow down Olympus, but rather, as per the_dan, it will help Olympus in the long run.

Re: Release date?
When you said 'release', I thought you ment Beta, rather than Gold.
I'm hoping that we'll see a beta this year, but the length of that, and the RC stages is unknown, I guess.
