A idea hit my head (and it hurt)

you can only vote good/bad if you participate in that conversation...

that way "only-read"-ers will can not change the karma-level of someone, only because he doesn't like the subject...

good idea no?

(yes i know, no suggestions, but the tracker is off!)
I highly disagree with this concept. Since the Karma system was introduced here I've made all of of five posts (if that) and have rated a good thirty. My perusing is also quite evident on the main phpBB forums - I signed up in July, 2001 (back when those boards were still here on area51) and only have about 170 posts. However, I visit the forums two to three times daily. 8O

I feel that the Karma system is a means by which I can give my input on a post without actually posting a response. In fact, many posts don't even deserve a reply. :P

I highly doubt you will find many users who give a 'bad' rating simply due to the topic at hand. I'd say that avast majority of users will do so based on attitude and quality of content.

On another note, it makes sense to me for higher karma users to have a more drastic effect when they rate users. For instance, user's with a full +5 karma level would have twice as much of an effect on rating other users as someone with a neutral level. :D

You do have a point about this board, I do think there won't be peepz here who vote bad because of the topic...
But other boards can have that problem (political forums, ... )
So it would be a handy feature i guess...

But i don't agree with the higer karma -> higer influence...
this way (again for specific boards) peepz who have hig karma could get someone fast in the red, yust becaus she/he doesn't like them...
but i could be feature to, won't mind asl long as it is posible to shut it down :)

I still disagree. Even in political forums, users will -not- vote someone down because they don't like a *topic*. They'll vote someone down because their *opinion* differs. Since karma is nothing but *user opinion*, this is, of course, perfectly natural.

Someone with high karma is obviously well-liked in the community and therefore *deserves* greater influence (and probably already has it in other ways). And if someone with good standing in the community doesn't like someone else, it's probably deservedly so.

i do not agree...

Karma (in my view) is not influenced by the path you walk (opinion)
but the way you walk it (using CAPS, 1 liners, rude language)

so you see what i think

I see what he means...

The "Rate: Good / Bad" bit is at the bottom of the post. Some people (n00bs, mainly) might think it is to rate that post or topic.

I think the rating should be in the actual user info part of the viewtopic page.

EG:
- [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] +

Or something similar.

You are rating that post ... the value you give it then goes on to influence the posters Karma, but it's not the sole element in that calculation.

Anything you see here is in the current _working_ version of the board (that version being 2.2).

Then our views of karma differ. Karma is a measure of the community and its users. If a user has something to contribute (and therefore others see their input/opinion as helpful to the community) they will wind up with good karma. If their posts harm, disrupt, or generally are ignored by the community, then they will receive bad karma.

Karma doesn't measure a user's behavior - it measures their place in the community as a whole.
