Funny he mentions trying phpBB for a month and not liking it... I wasted a load of money on vBulletin and wound up switching to phpBB about a week later.

Yeah, the bashers seem to be going on and on about how "difficult" and "awful" the templating and ACL Permissions are.
They want to have everything they use be moronically simple.
I just don't think you can always have the most flexible/powerful system by catering the lowest common denominator...
The templating engine here is so much more powerful than vb's current system if you put the time in to learn a little about it.
Same goes for the permissions/groups system. I don't think you can have "open" groups that users can request to join in vb, but I could be wrong about it.

Turning this away from bashing vB a little ...

To be honest I don't see why our system is difficult at all? In fact I've always thought it quite simple, variables are in {} and blocks are marked with <!-- BEGIN and END ... is this really so difficult. Cripes, guess we better not extent this after all in 2.2
As for permissions ... I somewhat agree, our system is quite complex and spread across three different admin modules. We'll address this (or it's my intention we address this) in 2.2. However we have something that, AFAIK no other similar board has in terms of many users mapping to many groups ... I'm under the impression this has grown on users around here(?). As such it will always lead to extra complication both of admin and backend code ... but we think it worth it for the extra functionality it brings.

[/quote94db5]They'll um... borrow it?
Actually, once I got used to the permissions system, I really like it now. But yeah, at first it seemed pretty complex. Now it seems pretty simple to do some pretty nifty things with it...
