I am talking about the showing of user agent strings.

Showing a user-agent would only require to ad one line of code somewhere and a placeholder in a template page... but it really passes me by why there would be any use of that.. simply because of the fact that you can change what is reported into whatever you want it to be

if you want to restrict or grant access based on that... good luck!!

" give access level permissions to some search engine robots and would like to identify them based on user agent"

I don't like that... because someone could easily manipulate the value of their browser's "user-agent" variable.

You can also enter the IP address of the bot, which makes this pretty difficult to fake. I also don't know what a user can gain from doing that. I hardly think that it makes sense to let bots crawl secret forums anyway. ;)

Especially due to google and other search engine's caching ability.

Anyway, IP forging isn't to difficult I believe, just bounce your addy of somewhere else.
