since you have to alter the folder permissions i really dont see the point in all these new cp options... people who drasticly alter the styles (and have decent sense when it comes to security) will still do it the old fashioned way ;)
It is a useful feature.

Say there is an overlooked error in a template file, and you are an admin, but not the original with FTP access. This means you can edit the tpl file if needed. Therefore, any admin can, rather than the one with the login details.

Not very secure? If it wasnt, it wouldnt be included.

If the template can't be written to the filesystem then it will be stored in the database...

Yeah, I'm not sure there is any way to deal with the permissions problem in shared hosting environments ...

The Preview feature was a nice gesture for people who make changes from the ACP. Now we can see if we're really screwing something up before applying it to the entire board.

To solve the argument... ?

Post by sj26 »

After skimming this post, the initial argument started over assign_var_from_handle() - the point Ptirhiik_ was trying to make seemed to me to be about the performance issue of using ob_start(), ob_get_contents(), etc. - this is a valid point, although marginal, as assign_var_from_handle compiled the template differently to assign the output to a variable, and not to be directly echoed. By doing this, rather than echoing it and using output buffering (which would be slightly less efficient), there was a slight performance gain. In a scripting environment like PHP these are valid issues as every bit of speed counts - when a script is being run 10 times per second, it adds up.
