I'm also developing a portal at the moment...

Its currently not on a public server, and its... far from finished!

It looks very good and Looks to be having some nice features too.

Also, i'd recommend that you investigate into the subforums of phpBB2.2 - i dont know how your news works, but, for example, with my portal, each subforum in the news forum becomes a sub category (and the image of the forum is the image of the category too) - and can create a very powerful forum.

I dont want to plug mine in here, i'll create a new topic some time.

Just finished that today :) Having the forum_image part of the forum table makes this so easy to implement. Here's hoping they keep that field in the table to make life easy. :D

The only thing I can see being a problem is if a site has a lot of news categories. Creating a subforum for each news ategory can get out of control if you have say 50-100 types. But for small sites which this portal is focusing on then creating say 5-10 sub forums isn't too bad.

Good luck on your portal, can't wait to see it in action.

P.S. I want to thank everyone for all the feedback on the portal.

If you are lucky, you can see mine at http://phpbb2.dyndns.org/phpBB" target="_blank ... only if i have my server running though.

I've also developed it so the "blocks" down the left and right can be turned on and off in the admin panel, for each individual page.

How is 50 sub forums a problem in the news forum?

I really like both of these designs. They are very nice starts. I can not wait for the final products.

Looks nice!!

You are far ahead of me with the knowledge base and news archives and admin panel. The only thing I have that you don't are the latest downloads and poll block but those are easy ones to code.

Well, for downloads, its not easy for me!!! I'm going to write a full ACP for organising the downloads... plus the same for the gallery... i've got alot of work... and i have to rescript the links totally :(

I think it will be in beta around the same time as 2.2 is...

I don't see a problem either; I thought forums were cached as well (or at least they should).

Note to self: make some time free to check out progress on the CVS...
