English here too!

Well Roel, (Or whatever) If you want to add a feature of IPB or vB3/2, Then Mod it.
"If you want those features, then use IPB or vB3."
Indeed.
phpBB is not meant to be bloated forum software which you use features every two months, It's a forum wityh features you use everyday.
That's why peopel like phpBB more than IPB, more then myBB, more than vBulletin, etc.
Just becasue you want something, doesn't mean we all want it.

Re: Invisionfeatures: Most active in..., calender, birthdays
While I agree that the phpBB team shouldn't incorporate new features just because board X has it, or someone specific wants it, I do think it's a good idea to at least review the features of the other active forum softwares out there and see if there isn't something that could improve phpBB, either in a specific feature or in some overall/general manner.
In other words, just because the phpBB user base doesn't request a given feature, it doesn't mean that said feature won't be used and appreciated by the user base if it is added. Sometimes, it is simply the case that the users had not considered a certain feature to be possible at all, or hadn't recognized a certain elegant solution to some 'problem' with how the forums work.
Just some thoughts. My concern here is just in encouraging phpBB team members not to get into "phpBB tunnel vision", where at some point they actually become resistant to certain new ideas if (for example) they appeared first in a competing product. I have seen this attitude wreck more than one project needlessly.
Thanks for reading!

Re: Invisionfeatures: Most active in..., calender, birthdays
We are always open for new ideas/features, posted to sourceforge we review every single one. Sometimes we have to decide against a feature if it will become a resource hog or if it is something not suitable for the majority of users. Sometimes we come up with cool, never seen features too.
But we will always code the stuff for ourselves. I for one never looked at the source of other boards, i fear to adapt some code if i do so.

Indeed ... and just to reiterate, we've been around over three years. That may not sound like much but compared to the vast majority of our peers, IPS included, it says a lot about the stability and maturity of this project and its community. We're not planning on falling by the wayside any time soon
Re: Invisionfeatures: Most active in..., calender, birthdays
I hope you're aware that the dev team has always made a feature request tracker available for everyone to suggest new features and has added many features from it.joelpt wrote:My concern here is just in encouraging phpBB team members not to get into "phpBB tunnel vision", where at some point they actually become resistant to certain new ideas if (for example) they appeared first in a competing product.
I'd hardly call that "Tunnel vision".

Re: Invisionfeatures: Most active in..., calender, birthdays
lol i disagree with that notion coz i wanted a warnings system and mysql indexless search in vb3 but they never added it the feature set is final for vb3 and the next major update is now going to be 3.1psoTFX wrote:This is phpBB, it's not IPB, it's not vB. If you want all the features offered in IPB, use it. If you want all the features offered in vB, use it. We cater for the "phpBB" userbase, we add features as most frequently requested by them. We do not add everything X board has just because "we can". All that gives you is vB3
a search without a search index is the best hack i ever had on Vb2
ah well even still i would like to propose phpbb has Mysql 4 search abilities

Re: Invisionfeatures: Most active in..., calender, birthdays
I think maybe we're missing psoTFX's and Acyd Burn's point. The phpBB community at large drives the feature set of phpBB, not the feature set of other boards. For those who prefer the feature set or design of another forum product, they should use that product. Why not? For those who prefer phpBB, they should use phpBB. It's not all that complicated.

When developers try to be "all things to all people" you end up with the bloated ugly mess we call vB 3.0.
No thanks.
