Re: Posting Pictures
attachment is one thing, but when you attach a file, the board software won't know it is an image, and before the actual upload you won't know the URL to the attachment, posting an attachment and then editing a post etc. isn't the best way to upload a picture and add it to your message.

Re: Posting Pictures
You realy should try the feature before comminting on it. When you post an attachment that is a graphic it displays it in the message. You dont have to edit your post or anything.TheElf wrote:attachment is one thing, but when you attach a file, the board software won't know it is an image, and before the actual upload you won't know the URL to the attachment, posting an attachment and then editing a post etc. isn't the best way to upload a picture and add it to your message.
Re: Posting Pictures
Do you think it will work with all present and future graphic formats? Recognizing a file as graphics file can be done with complex librabraries that know the format well, or by examining the filename. But as you might know the later method isn't 100% accurate for various reasons.benchayeel wrote: You realy should try the feature before comminting on it. It can't recognize jpg files renamed by some apliacations (for any reasons), but if you use a file that has a format.jpg for teling how to handle jpg format the script would try to display it. Should I show these cases for you? As I said automatic recognition of picture can be tricky and not so accurate, so you can't be 100% sure about it.
Read my reasons before commenting, and try if the recognition of graphics files are accurate or can lead to a point where you should do these updates manually.
How it would be easier? Simple: with [attach#] tag. If you can use this code even inside other BB code tags (for example URL tag) you can insert both flash, images, renamed and sometimes plugin dependent (interactive) graphics in any format to your post easily, and you can place your ttachments to their logical place in the post.
As I said attachment feature is highly different from an add image feature, since an attachment feature cannot be 100% sure what an uploaded file is and where it belongs (within the post) if you have any button or tag telling these information it will work.
Try to write an article where you need 3 screenshots to illustrate 3 steps of the instalation and upload all the images etc. Tell me when you have a good result.
Re: Posting Pictures
Oh, and another more practical side note:
You have a lot of wallpapers most of them are in various sizes.
You may UPLOAD all the images as attachments, but want only the smalest image to displayed on the forum itself. Yet you want to give users a chance to 1 click preview your wallpapers by opening them in your browser. In this case you have one image displayed in post, and 3 attached (but not to be displayed) images, and displaying any of these images would hurt (they are too large and the design won't tolerate it).
An added image is a part of your post which has a place in your post and you know where and how should it be displayed and can tell the forum software all these data. An attachment is something you add to a post and let people to download it. And automatic display of ALL image attachments should be disabled by default because 1280*1024 wallpapers, screenshots, etc would make several problems.

Re: Posting Pictures
Displaying Attachments inside message content is indeed not possible, attachments are displayed below the message. Please have in mind this is a Forum and nothing else.
All other comments you made are invalid for various reasons. The code tries not to recognise anything, you have to specify what to do with files based on their extension. If you want to stream files, display them... or just link to them, if you want to create thumbnails, to display images inline (but not if they are greater than <width>x<height>).
As was said earlier, please have a look at a feature you are commenting on.

Re: Posting Pictures
I think it would be really kewl to add a picture to a post without the attachement. IdealBB has attachement and image adding.
Re: Posting Pictures
You can add a picture to any phpBB post with [img] ... it's not uploaded, it's linked to remotely. That's all we'll be doing, and frankly this whole "IPB can do X, IdealBB can do Y" is becoming annoying. If one of those boards does what you need, feel absolutely free to use it instead.
Re: Posting Pictures
Ok thanx I'll go visit [another board] since no can give ideas here!
