Re: Has working on PHPBB yeilded any JOBS?
Europeans use PHP more than USA-based companies. MS is too expensive for some people to use. The biggest problem with big business is that it often pays out the wazoo for the conventionally accepted solutions, even though new ideas can potentially save them untold fortunes.
I could save a company over $10,000 by building a server using Linux, Apache, and coding the website in PHP. But business is afraid of it because it sounds new and proably because its mostly FREE they think there must be something wrong with it. Add to that the fact that IT professionals have invested years and money into learning MS stuff, they reject open-source technology because it would mean all that experience would be worthless. Its a self-defense thing. I have to work in ASP at work, but all my personal stuff is PHP.
I would love to have a job as a PHP developer, if only that it meant my employer was smart enough to make decisions based on what was a good idea, rather than fear of change.

If you were a company what would you choose for a long term investment?
A language built by a few guys in their spare time, or a language which took years of dedicated well paid teams which has a financial obligation to keep supporting that language in the future?
I personaly would choose PHP, but I am not supporting a billion dollar buisness.

Ok it's me again, the tread starter. (I really need to sign up huh?)
I see that some viewers have been responding and first off I want to thank you for sharing your time with me.
The goal as I see it is that for MANY small buisnesses they have no SURE fire solution to building and maintaing a functioning web site WITHOUT knowing a scripting/programming language. I built this system for people (like my mother, friend, ect) who have eigther no desire or no skill to chop and carve a tree into a canoe just to go fishing! So by my perspective there are many small buisnesses and wanna be buisness people who have a desire to become WEB ENABLED but just don;t have the resource and or time.
This is where I step in. I allow these people to acheive THIER vision and only if they so choose should they be presented to the garden that is the CODE. This practice is similar to PHPBB, except that when there is a buisness entity the customer know EXACTLy who to communicate to - the people who they PAY to build/maintain a certain SERVICE.
PHPBB is a solution but http://www.vbulletin.com" target="_blank IS a service AND they are making a rediculous amount of money doing basicly the same thing these wonderful people at PHPBB do for free.
From what I understand http://www.vbulletin.com" target="_blank is in the process of going from a Bulletin board to a full blown CMS. They have been plaining it for some time and the new VB3.0 http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthre ... adid=62743" target="_blank which shows the great strides in thier code/approach they have made. With a user base of around 2000 - 5000. They stand to make over 1 Million in sales from a CMS system alone! 5000 * $200 (base model)! I hear little cash registers and I want in (fair and square of course)!
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthre ... management" target="_blank
Ok, I 'm leaning this way ahyhow so why don;t I just make a pitch right here.
Based opon what I have done in code and structure all I need is a intellegent group of 2-4 developers. It would actually inspire me if someone from PHPBB decided to inquire, since I *KNOW* these guys can code, have dicipline in time to market and concept/code structure!
I really want to stress that I'm not really looking for employees par-se. I would actually like to give the initial developers a share or stake in the company. I think this fosters a trust between the developer and the company in working together twoards a common vision. And really just flat out it seems like a just and correct thing to do given the stakes.
So there you have it. I originally started this tread as a query to see if the PHP commercial community had given back to these guys what they deserve like nice jobs at Yahoo, google or IBM.
And as irony has it I'm doing the pitching! Well, I'm having a nice day hope you are as well.
Cheers,
KB

Ever heard of the sims? (you know, that game?)
Well, take a look at the bottom of their forum page...

Seems like Electronic Arts would like to disagree with your statment there.
PS: SHould one of you important forum leaders tell EA that their Forum software is outta date by several revisions?

PHP is geting big and with is so it phpBB.
i like what KB said above, espically:
"PHPBB is a solution but http://www.vbulletin.com" target="_blank IS a service AND they are making a rediculous amount of money doing basicly the same thing these wonderful people at PHPBB do for free. "
its true, these guys work their socks off to build a great communication source and im guessin vB do as well, just they see the reward differently.
vB see money at the end of the tunnel, where as phpBB see a future for a great free community message board and a chance to make a differnce in the forums. That shows true humanity.
I rate the entire phpBB team for doing so.
