any version before 2.2 is development. This is why they only appear on sourceforge. They may be buggy and instable. Do not expect support for them.
The version in area51 is different from the cvs and therefore you cannot extrapolate from what you see here and there.
Either you're confident enough with php to handle using a dev version, or you should stick to the latest released version (ie 2.05).

We don't add Mods to phpBB at all, full stop. The 2.0.x line is feature frozen, we add nothing to it ... the aim is to increase stability and compatibility (something you cannot do if you add new features).

2.0.5 contains various bug fixes and is a recommended upgrade.

Since 2.05 is realeased and you don't plan creating a 2.06, does this mean you will delete phpBB 2.0.x Snapshots and everybody will work on 2.2 so the development will be a little bit faster?

phpBB 2.0.x development isn't stopping, but rather just holding until 2.2 RC1. There have been some 2.0.x changes in CVS the last couple of days anyway.

I don't mean to sound dumb,, but I'm confused... :?

Micheal, what do you mean that development of phpBB 2.0.x has not stopped,
but is just being halted until the release of phpBB v2.2 RC1?
I personally don't see the point of this I'm afraid... could someone unconfuse
me? --> I mean, you have version 2.0.5 of something, but stop working on it
till version 2.2 is released then go back to 2.0.x ..?

I guess I am missing something here. :P
But could someone fill me in - since as you can see I don't quite understand.

Thanks. :)

You're missing something ...

I've moved development "exclusively" to 2.2 ... that is to say submitted bugs in 2.0.5 will not be tackled until 2.2.0 RC-1 is made available. Once that point is reached we will look @ working toward future releases of the 2.0.x line.

Why do this? Well not all users are likely to upgrade to 2.2 ... a not insignificant number chose and remain with phpBB 2.0.x because it offers all they need without lots of bloat. It would be unfair on them to drop bug fix releases of what otherwise is a stable, "secure", well supported by the community product.

The situation differs significantly from that of the jump from 1.x to 2.0.x. With 1.x we had an inherently insecure product that was limited in scope. It made little sense to maintain that codebase when all we would be doing is patching up a never ending stream of holes (unless we rewrote very large portions of it).
