Conditions

Post by haravikk »

The whole new conditions thing being added to 2.2 (might be the wrong name for it but the part where admins can define "rules" for setting ranks, permissions etc) sounds really cool.

But I'm wondering, does any board have a similar system in existance? It sounds like a totally revolutionary new idea as far as Bulletin Boards go to me and I'm sure I'm going to love playing around with how those things work :D

I think it's "events" that you're talking about?

I've never come accross anything as powerful. But no doubt it'll get emulated :(

I don't believe it does ... other forums generally have something along the lines of "Member X reaches Y posts and gains Z rank/permission". Assuming it comes together (and that remains a fairly big assumption!) our system will be more generalised than this.

psoTFX is righty on this one.

Other systems don't have a wider spectrum of options when it comes to defining events like v2.1-2 will do in the future.

It's a cool little option that I'll love to tweak and tweak to death :)

Sounds really cool. Is there a list of conditions and events yet that are expected to be added, or is that waiting until you're closer to getting the feature started?

There are loads of things I'd love to do with the events system such as change the colour of users to go with ranks, grey out posts/PM's/topics by banned users. Highlight posts/topics made by moderators and all sorts.

Of course, there are more complex things I'd like (but probably wouldn't be easy or efficient to do) such as rewarding users with high karma with more signature space, enhanced posting rights (e.g - allow them to post flash), bigger PM's space (inbox, outbox etc), higher post lengths and all sorts of other things (posting frequency? Unmarked editing?). I could list till doomsday if you wanted me to :)

It's not that diverse ... I'm sure you'll be able to Mod it to do some of those things you note. However for the average user on the average server they would be overkill both for the user themselves and the server :D

Some of the things you nota haravikk I'd like indeed.

Yet I think the approach of events it's to set some sort of "basic" [average users like pso said] options started and leave it there, so people can then use it at will to MOD the board in a more advanced manner when it comes to settings events.

Specially I liked that "grey out posts/PM's/topics by banned users", could be useful when browsing the forums, and I'm sure after the system is implemented could be done somehow.

I've tested 2.1, still am day after day, and I find it to be very customizable at the end. They're leaving a vast space where users will put to use their imagination and come up with advanced or specific options from what's there already. You'll see mods flying pretty soon after the first 2 weeks of the release, once the moddes get used to the current changes.

So don't worry, events will rock at the end of the day. :)

I'm just waiting to get my hands on the UCP, I love the idea behind it.

Since as lead developer and the one overseeing events (well, I see oversee all 2.2 code but certain areas are designated specifically to each developer) ... I've a fair idea of what the events system will do ;)

Will it be easy to add new types of events? E.g, just go into the events script and add an extra "module" and then place some corresponding code somewhere? If it were possible to create files containing additional events that just drop in and get compiled like themes (ie added to one larger file with all events in it) then that would make modding a lot easier, and make it much easier for users to set them up and customise them using events
