iconify is just one option if you want you can use png with the new icon function, but iconify is no different than font-awsome you can host it locally if you want. We will not provide that by default but it is possible. As for license most icon are released under the same license or compatible ones so its not really an issue.
As for design that is subjective some do work together. The sizes again is an issue related to bad icon libraries. As for different libraries being different sizes. This is easily solved with a library class which will be added in version 2.0. We are already using our own for now though.
