Name of the new style

default is a little techy IMHO. Maybe something like base would work better for that type of name.

Base/default.. smell is the same, but i think you are right about base, it describes the whole system and by that it also points to default.

Yes, base is perfectly fine IMO, as long as it's one of the last choices and we go ahead, the die is rolled.

As I don't know how styles will work with the style structure I am not sure.

If the new style is going to work as now being a "parent" with child styles then base sounds OK but if not then the question would have to be - "base of what"?

Just call it "Granny" to refer to inheritance. Or something like "Genesis" (albeit that might be a bit too Christian)

well it will work completely different. Essentially it will always load something if it’s in the template folder and if it does not find it it will load it from the all folder. It will just be performing inheritance at the component level rather than the theme. You are correct you do not base off the theme but instead have fallbacks for every component. So fallback would be a more accurate description.
