UPDATED OPTIONS FOR VOTING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In an effort to attempt to figure this out both for the new theme and for prosilver while bringing it up to retina standards.
We need to review and decide on how we want to handle the notification that a user is currently online.
The current way this is handled in prosilver is through the use of the following image https://github.com/phpbb/phpbb/blob/mas ... online.gif
There are a number of issues with this implementation.
1. It only works for english speaking users as its an image we can not change the language
2. Its oddly placed and shaped causing countless issue with rendering on different devices plaguing development.
3. Its mall an the color is not immediately obvious as it blends in.
We have a couple of different options in how we could handle this
1. status icon next to username when online
2. status icon next to username when online & offline
3. Simple status icon in upper corner
these are all just suggestions if you have better concepts let me know
#1
#2 (uses #1 for online)
#3 (or variation could just be green corner)

Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
Both codepen links throw a 404 right now.
Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
hmm seems parser does not like trailing
)
for links should work nowRe: [Redesign] User Online Banner
Personally I am not a great fan of "glowing" images - although they can look right in the right place.
I would go for something simple, either a "traffic light" or just plain coloured text (green for online, red for offline)
At the end of the day does anybody really take much notice of the online/offline status anyway?

Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
@6 is pretty the same as the current solution. But without any words in the icon. There could be a lot of variation imagineable. At the moment I would prefer this. Maybe like this: https://cloud.crizzo.de/index.php/s/4eWlpjnOPpL6Kn2 (Xenforo). But needs a solution for Non-Avatar-Postprofiles, if we choose anything sticked to the avatar.
@3.: We would lose the changing bg-colour every 2nd post, if 2 or more user in a row are online at the same time.
@4/5.: I cannot imagine how this would look good.
@1.: Would be the vBulletion solution. Is a bit dowdy.

What is the suppose of this question? Do you suggest to remove the online image or don't spend time on a thing, you think nobody cares anyway?david63 wrote: Sun Mar 26, 2017 9:27 pm At the end of the day does anybody really take much notice of the online/offline status anyway?
Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
some suggested examples
both4 & 5 examples 7th option bg example the bg options might be problematic with prosilver due to its layout, but easier in new theme.
also thoughts on the avatar option, there are a lot of variations on it but it would require hardcoding the default avatars, which I am not against but whats everyone elses thoughts on this? It could be done using gravatar if enabled else then load the included default

Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
We could recreate the same banner using CSS3 shapes and transform.
Give it CSS classes so anyone can change font properties, background color etc. and leave it to style authors to create unique banners.

Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
that only solves one of the problems... it does not solve the issue of space requirements especially when you have languages the require 20+ chars. Its better to not use any kind of words
Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
I think this should be simple. 2th option
and should be useful in some way. 7th option

Re: [Redesign] User Online Banner
I believe that not having the online/offline image (or any other indicator) is an option that should be considered. To some extent it is meaningless as it does not show who is actually online but who has an active session which is not the same thing.Crizzo wrote: Sun Mar 26, 2017 9:33 pm What is the suppose of this question?
