Maintenance releases (3.1.6, 3.1.7, etc) are mainly for bug fixes, not for new features.
New features would be added to the following major version.
Hi DavidIQ,

Are you really sure it is a new feature and not a bug fix? ;)

Actually, version 3.1 was developed as a "vast improvement" to the former modifications (MODs).

With extensions, you no longer have to modify a single line of code in phpBB.
Extensions are simply uploaded to your board and enabled inside the ACP.
Updating, disabling and removing extensions is equally as easy to perform.
So I think it is a mere bug fix because they just forgot to integrate the upload button on development.

@Nicofuma
It is a step in the right direction....

There is already a validated extension available. Just integrate it into the 3.2 package...
...or change the upload path in AutoMOD and put it into the phpBB 3.2 standard package.

No it's not a bug no matter how you try to spin it, sorry. And if you don't think that having the ability to install extensions all on its own is a vast improvement over MODs then we shouldn't be having this conversation. ;)

OK, it is a vast improvement....

....but still hoping to find anyone who can speed up the long-winded process of
development a little bit since 3.1 has been feature frozen for almost 2 years.

Where to even start with this...

Actually I don't think I'll say much more since it doesn't even look like you're aware that we're in the process of finalizing 3.2.

Sure, I have noticed that,

but as you wrote in a previous posting, 3.2 is already in beta state and feature frozen, as well (maybe for the next almost 2 years until version 3.3 or 4.0).

You can expect to see it in 3.3 (or 4.0...not sure which version we're going to be doing next) since 3.2 is already in beta and is feature frozen. So the "Upload Extensions" extension will be the way to go in 3.1 and 3.2.

When did using an FTP program to upload a folder become such a hassle?
Has an irascible disposition.

No, that is actually not the point. I see no reason why it should be necessary
telling users to upload the files of an extension through FTP instead of
managing the upload much more comfortable through the ACP via a browser.

By the way, it doesn't make any sense using the "Upload Extensions" extension
for uploading a desired extension if we need a FTP program in order to install
the "Upload Extensions" extension for itself. Why two steps instead of one?
It would be still easier to handle to upload only the desired extension through
FTP (if a FTP program is required anyhow).

The new extension management is a milestone in phpBB 3.1 but it isn't as
comfortable to handle as it could be because of its missing upload function.

But the most annoying thing (at least for me) is that because of the rules of
development we probably have to wait another 2 years for the implementation
although it should have already done in version 3.1 as part of the new extension
management. That's my opinion.

Well wouldn't one have to use FTP to put the phpBB files up on the server anyways? What's so difficult in uploading an extension that is a fraction of the size of the core at the same time to then not have to do upload any other extensions the same way? It's really not that difficult. Plus it doesn't just allow you to upload an extension. It also allows you to search for extensions and install them.

Yes.
Even easier.. directly put the 'upload extension' into the phpBB package prior to upload it, once phpBB it will be installed you can activate the extension from the ACP, two birds with just one seed. :)
Want to compensate me for my interest? Don't ask me, just do it
I'm available for custom phpBB jobs, you can PM me the details.
