May be, but who will make it ? There is no team who read what users want for addons and make that addons wich users want...

I run several forums and I wouldn't want that so it it might not be popular enough of an idea to make it in the core of 3.1 as you think.

Just because something isn't available as an extension doesn't make it good for the core. In fact, it could be argued that if it's not even popular enough to be an Extension then it shouldn't be in the core.
